Rare book, no longer in print, Genocide and Vendetta unpacks one of the darkest chapters in California history: the literal genocide ("a war of extermination" as the first governor of California, Peter Hardeman Burnett, enthusiastically phrased it in ) of Native Americans by European Americans in Round Valley, CA, in Mendocino County/5(3). Round Valley was a sea of gramma grass on which stolen horses and cattle could fatten after their brands had been “doctored”. The White Mountains contained countless hiding places. A. F. Banta, an early day legislator, once said “I am no angel and have seen most of the tough town’s of the West, but Springerville is the worst of them all.”. The Round Valley Reservoir in Clinton Township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States, was formed in when the New Jersey Water Authority constructed two large dams and flooded a large valley. The reservoir is named after the naturally formed circular valley surrounded by Cushetunk deep valley was caused by erosion of the soft sedimentary on: Clinton Township, New Jersey. Jack Becker was a life-long resident of Round Valley, and a descendant of Gustav Becker (one of Round Valley's pioneer settlers). Jack devoted many years to researching the early history and settlement of the area.
Round Valley has been the heart of the Yuki territory “since time began”. The Yuki have lived on their ancestral homeland (stretching from Humboldt Bay to the upper Russian River area) for o years prior to other tribes immigrating into California. The Yuki are thought to be the original Paleo-Indians of California. Over 50 years ago, it was once a town in a valley that was purchased by the government, then dammed at its exits, allowed to slowly flooded from ground water, later actively pumped up to flood the area to its current level. Its used as a reserve water supply to the NJ water system, should the principle reservoir run low. Round Valley Recreation Area covers 3, acres, the 2,acre reservoir surrounded by forest and recreation areas. The reservoir has a capacity of 55 billion gallons and is one of the deepest. Round Valley reservoir is the largest water body in New Jersey; the park provides for camping, kayaking and hiking. In summer on weekends it can get full and its best to get there early; there are benches and picnic tables around the lake and small 'beach' where swimming is allowed.
